Presentation details

An approach to designing typefaces for South Asian languages for contemporary typographic use.

Session NA | Room Anahuac room 3
Thursday 29 October | 10:00 – 10:40

Theme TypeTech | Duration: 40 minutes

This presentation aims to introduce the main steps to consider when designing a typeface for a writing system different than the Latin alphabet, with a focus on the scripts of South Asia. The development of such a typeface for font production is often a collaboration between the various specialists in the field: calligraphers, non-Latin typeface designers, software developers and linguists. Apart from illustrating the different design aspects that are involved in merging the linguistic requirements and the typographic conventions, this talk will also cover aspects of the technological production process for OpenType fonts.
