The ATypI 2003 Conference, with the theme Between Text & Reader, will take place on September 25 through 28 in Vancouver, Canada. The Conference is being held in partnership with the Emily Carr Institute of Art + Design, one of Canada’s most important and prestigious art schools.
On Thursday evening September 25 we will have the opening events at the Westin Bayshore Resort & Marina following registration in the afternoon. The keynote speaker this year will be Canadian Robert Bringhurst, whose book The Elements of Typographic Style is a recognized classic in the field. Dr Ron Burnett, President of the Emily Carr Institute of Art + Design, will also speak as we embark on our partnership event.
The program is nearly all decided now for the Vancouver 2003 conference. Confirmed speakers include Roger Black, Erik Spiekermann, Gerard Unger, Doyald Young, Jean-François Porchez, Shelley Gruendler, Akira Kobayashi and many more. The Conference content is being managed by John Hudson and Ross Mills of Tiro Typeworks, Vancouver, with assistance from Nick Shinn and Rod McDonald and advice from ATypI Board members Roger Black (Font Bureau, Danilo Black), David Lemon (Adobe Systems), John D. Berry (CreativePro), and Jean-François Porchez (Porchez Typofonderie).
Our conference has a variety of thematic tracks on many aspects of type, typography and design, including Design & function; Design & theory; Design for Canada; Reading the past; Old & new metal; plus special presentations, and forums devoted to Arabic and Hebrew typography, type education, and font business. The conference will have three concurrent speaker sessions over most of the event.
Please note that unlike previous ATypI conferences, we plan to run conference content on Sunday afternoon up until 3:00 p.m., when ATypI will hold its Annual General Meeting before adjourning the conference until next year at Prague.

On-site Registration & Goody Bag Pickup
On-site registration, badge and goody bag pickup will be at the Westin Bayshore Resort & Marina starting at noon on Thursday, September 25th. The opening events will start at around 6:00 in the evening at the Westin, with a cocktail hour and the Conference opening and Keynote address.

Wednesday, September 24th and Thursday, September 25th.
There are several additional activities planned to enhance the Conference for attendees. There are both one-day and two-day events.

Gala Dinner sponsored by Linotype Library
The traditional ATypI Gala Dinner, a full evening-long event, will be held on Saturday night, September 27th at Bridges Restaurant (www.bridgesrestaurant.com) within walking distance of the Emily Carr Institute on Granville Island. Price includes dinner, entertainment and unlimited beer and wine for $75. A beautiful restaurant with a fabulous view of the bridge, the bay, and the mountains!
