A brush with Old Father Catich
A spirited duel between Cynthia Batty and John Downer helped enliven today's lunch hour. Delegates rushed to capture the debate on film as the contestants demonstrated their rival techniques for replicating the classical Roman inscriptional letter. A considerable audience built up as the demonstration took place, with lively interaction between the panel and the audience. Some questioned the process of marking out inscriptions at very small sizes. Others wanted to know where on earth the serif had come from anyway.
It's quite clear that the proponents of each point of view were sticking to their beliefs. As for the audience: was anybody converted? Let us know.
