Jonathan Hoefler takes Prix Charles Peignot

Thursday 19 September. Rome. Jonathan Hoefler, proprietor of the Hoefler Type Foundry was today presented with the Prix Charles Peignot, AtypI and the type world’s premier award.

Jonathan, 32, was named one of the forty most influential designers in America by ID magazine, and has designed dozens of type families for some of the world’s foremost publications, corporations and institutions.

The Prix Charles Peignot was first awarded in 1982 and Jonathan is the seventh person to get the accolade, which is awarded about every four years to an outstanding type designer under the age of 35. Other recipients have been Jean Francois Porchez, Carol Twombly, Robert Slimbach, Petr van Blokland, Jovica Veljovic, and Clause Mediavilla.

Award holders have been from as wide variety of countries and backgrounds. What they have in common is their interest and ability in the craft of typeface design. In each case they are representative of the very best of their generation.
